I have never “guest blogged” before. In fact, I have never blogged at all except answering some questions for a few bloggers. That being said, I guess I should start by telling you who I am. I am Cindy J. Smith. I am a poet with two books that were recently republished by myself and I drive a truck with my husband.
Today’s topic is going to be Facebook Events. This is on my mind because I had one on December 1st that had a upsetting thing happen.
As Indie authors, we try to find ways to get the word out about our books. Money is tight so we try to figure out how to make it fun and get results. I guess that is where “events” came into play. These things are not cheap. We buy all the “swag” and pay to ship it out. Usually we get very little back from them initially, but hope that the exposure will help.
During my event, I posted a “Grand Prize” which anyone who bought my book(s) could enter. If you bought both, you got two entries. Well, I sold one copy of both of them to two people and a dear friend bought one copy of the one she was missing. Within hours of posting the winner’s name, one set of the books was returned to Amazon.
It really hurt my feelings as my prize included two e-books which cost me a total greater than my own books.
Being self-published, I can see what I sold and I can see what has been returned. I just want to say that people should stop and consider their actions. All the stuff in the prize list was available throughout the day in other games. If you just want the prizes and not the books, play the games. Don’t pretend you appreciate our artistic endeavors by buying our books and returning them.
We are only asking for you to share our name and maybe one of your friends might be interested in our work.
